A woodblock-printed book spread features vertical columns of black-inked calligraphic text on fibrous cream paper. On the left, a black rectangular border frames characters that overlap faint, colored outlines of figures (see "Inscriptions"). The right page is mostly blank, displaying the paper's natural texture and scattered age spots. Subtle creases and small dark marks appear across the aged surface of the open pages.
