A horizontally oriented spread of aged, cream-colored paper is inked with columns of black Japanese calligraphy. The cursive characters flow in undulating vertical strands, creating a sense of movement down the pages. A central stitched seam divides the spread, which shows subtle wear. Along the bottom, smaller ink symbols and names are staggered in columns, grounding the airy, loose script that fills the upper portion of the book.
