A vertically oriented watercolor on cream vellum depicts a red peony within thin brown rectangular borders. The densely petaled flower with frilled layers sits atop a green stem in the upper two-thirds of the frame, accompanied by dark green leaves. The bare stem extends through the lower third. To the right, stacked, uneven edges of a bound volume are visible, contrasting with the smooth central page and its faint horizontal creases.
