Description

The title page for this set of prints suggests that Bourdon’s designs are “useful for clockmakers, goldsmiths, chiselers, engravers, and other people.” These craftsmen who made ornamented objects sometimes consulted printed designs for inspiration. However, pattern prints similar to Bourdon’s also catered to aristocrats and wealthy professionals who pursued knowledge about styles and artists as a form of entertainment.
A horizontally oriented print in black ink depicts people in light skin tones. In the upper left, a man in a cap and cloak smokes a pipe while writing on a scroll at a round table. To the right, a large oval medallion contains intricate foliate patterns surrounding two figures. Five smaller circular and shaped designs with dense scrollwork line the bottom. Script text and a red stamp appear along the base.
