Description

In the late 1400s and early 1500s Rouen was an established and important center of book production. The city’s cathedral had a wealthy chapter that spent large sums of money to commission books and to maintain its extensive library. The stationers and booksellers would have likely been concentrated in or near the cathedral precinct. This artist, named after a manuscript now in Geneva, was Rouen’s principal illuminator during the second half of the 1400s.
Black ink and tempera with gold on vertical vellum features two distinct sides. On the left, columns of black script are punctuated by a large gilded blue initial and small patterned rectangles. The phrase "Pater noster" appears twice. On the right, an intricate border displays winding blue vines, tan flowers, and red-tipped thistles on green stems. This aged cream-colored page balances structured calligraphy with fluid botanical patterns and ornate gilding across the composition.
