Description

This sketchbook contains 72 pages of pencil drawings and 9 watercolors of Cape Ann. On the inside of the cover Prendergast wrote the address of the Granite Shore Hotel in Rockport, Massachusetts.
A horizontally oriented graphite drawing on cream paper depicts a harbor scene with gestural, sketchy lines. In the foreground, dense bushes and two figures sit near the center. The word "blue" is written in cursive across the water where a boat floats to the left. Simple houses sit at the base of rolling hills in the background under a sky of wispy strokes. Indecipherable cursive text runs along the bottom edge.
