Description

Very few complete lace headdresses from the 1700s and 1800s (known as a ‘lace head’) survive, but three pieces formed this type of headwear. This long piece of lace formed the cap edging and lappets and is one part of a ‘lace head’; a complete lace headdress can be seen in CMA objects 1936.489 and 1936.490.
A horizontally long linen bobbin lace strip with rounded ends features repeating off-white floral patterns. At the center, a wide rectangular cutout at the bottom creates a slender section connecting two wider panels. Blossoms and leaves are worked across a translucent mesh ground. A continuous border of delicate scallops traces the entire perimeter. Set against a solid black ground, the textile highlights intricate botanical motifs throughout its airy, delicate construction.
