Description

Very few complete lace headdresses from the 1700s and 1800s (known as a ‘lace head’) survive, but three pieces formed this type of headwear. This narrow piece of lace formed one of the two lappets (streamers that frame the face) and is one part of a ‘lace head’. a complete lace headdress can be seen in CMA objects 1936.489 and 1936.490.
A horizontally long off-white linen needle lace strip is worked with intricate floral and foliate patterns. Dense motifs of flowers, leaves, and winding vines are interconnected by a delicate, open mesh background. The band features a rounded left end and a straight right end, with scalloped borders along the top and bottom. Variations in thread thickness create textured depth across the complex, airy lace composition.
