Description

Georges Reverdy (French, active 1529-1561) Frieze of Children Dancing to a Bagpipe, 1570 Engraving Gift of Leonard C. Hanna, Jr. 1928.771
A horizontally oriented black ink print depicts nine nude children with pudgy bodies, short, wavy hair, and light skin tones amidst stone ruins. Shading is rendered through precise cross-hatching. On the left, one child sits atop another crawling on hands and knees. Six children dance across the center toward the right with limbs extended. On the far right, a child stands on a block marked with I, playing bagpipes. Inscriptions line the bottom.
