A vertically oriented brown-inked etching on cream paper depicts a complex bookplate. Fine line-work and cross-hatching form a central oval landscape, encircled by winding ribbons reading "EX LIBRIS" and "GREAT IS THE GIFT THAT BRINGETH KNOWLEDGE" intertwined with sprawling, leafy vines. Below, vertical book spines flank an open volume. A rectangular cartouche at the base contains the name "WILLIAM SMELLIE." and "1905" set within a border of repeated organic flourishes.
