Celebrate the official start of spring in Cleveland as director William M. Griswold opens the iconic doors for the season
Cleveland (March 31, 2022)—Join the Cleveland Museum of Art (CMA) Friday, April 1, at noon as director William M. Griswold opens the south doors of the museum’s historic 1916 building for the first time this season. The opening of the south doors signifies the official start of spring in Cleveland, and local trumpeters will be on-site to commemorate the moment.
Celebrate the warmer weather and explore the museum’s outdoor campus. Stroll through the tree-lined walkways of the Fine Arts Garden—masterfully designed by the firm of landscape architect Frederick Law Olmsted, the designer of Central Park in New York City. The Fine Arts Garden features a selection of exceptional public statuary. Highlights include Edith Barretto Stevens Parsons’ Turtle Baby; Malvina Hoffman’s Boy and Panther Cub; and Chester A. Beach’s Twelve Signs of the Zodiac and Fountain of the Waters.
The Smith Family Gateway, the museum’s park along the west side of the building featuring trails, lush landscaping and overlooks, is a perfect spot to enjoy a picnic lunch. Pack your own or purchase something to go from Provenance Café.
Later this spring, the weeping Japanese cherry trees surrounding Wade Lagoon will beckon visitors from near and far. Capture a selfie and discover Japan’s unofficial flower, representing a time of renewal and optimism. Learn more about the art surrounding the lagoon by reading the April 2020 CMA Thinker blog article, “Find the Art among the Cherry Blossoms.”
Inside the museum, explore limited-time exhibitions, like Alberto Giacometti: Toward the Ultimate Figure, on view through June 12; browse favorite galleries; or take a self-guided tour via the ArtLens App of artworks celebrating the season.
The ArtLens App (ArtLens Download Instructions) is available for FREE to download to iOS 14 or higher and to Android devices (5.1+).
