The Cleveland Museum of Art Presents the 2022 Lunchtime Lecture Series

Free series brings together renowned experts to discuss CMA collections currently on display

Cleveland, OH (September 1, 2022) – The Cleveland Museum of Art (CMA) announces the fall lectures for its 2022 Lunchtime Lecture Series. Held the first Tuesday of each month, curators, conservators, scholars, and other museum staff share a deeper understanding and insight into objects in the CMA’s permanent collection in these free 30-minute talks.

Selected for their leadership and expertise in specific research areas and to acquaint audiences in Northeast Ohio with different approaches to art, the speakers include: Elena Mars, Samuel H. Kress Fellow in Objects Conservation, Leslie Cade, Director of Ingalls Library and Museum Archives, Seth Pevnick, Curator of Greek and Roman Art, Colleen Snyder, Associate Conservator of Objects; and Sooa Im McCormick, Curator of Korean Art.

Each lecture is free and open to the public, but reservations are recommended. The CMA recommends reserving tickets through its online platform by visiting the Lunchtime Lecture Series. Tickets can also be reserved by phone at 216-421-7350.

A Concurrent Study of Two Maya Incensarios

Many Pre-Columbian objects are categorized solely by their iconography, given that there is little documentation of when and where they were retrieved from. To combat this, conservators and conservation scientists perform technical analysis to provide a deeper understanding of these objects and to inform how they are conserved and exhibited. Join Elena Mars, the CMA’s Samuel H. Kress Fellow in objects conservation, as she discusses her study of two painted earthenware Maya incensarios (incense burner supports) and how she used a variety of techniques to determine their authenticity.

CMA Backstories: Women Collectors Build Cleveland Collections

The Cleveland Museum of Art is renowned for the quality and breadth of its collection. Throughout the years, the museum has relied on the expertise and generosity of benefactors, many of whom were women, to achieve this goal. In this lecture, Leslie Cade, director of Ingalls Library and Museum Archives, introduces a few of these extraordinary women, including Emery May Norweb, whose Pre-Columbian art formed the basis of the museum’s collection in that area, and India Early Minshall, an expert in Russian history and Fabergé.

New Light on an Ancient Bronze: Ongoing Research on the Cleveland Apollo

Since its acquisition nearly 20 years ago, the Cleveland Apollo has taken its place as both a CMA visitor favorite and a rare example of a nearly intact large-scale ancient bronze sculpture. Cast in hollow bronze sections using the indirect lost-wax technique, the sculpture still appears strikingly lifelike today, many centuries after its creation. How to Read Korean Animal Paintings
Speaker: Sooa Im McCormick

Traditional Korean paintings feature not only animals that are native to the ecosystems in the Korean Peninsula, such as tigers, leopards, and cranes, but also exotic ones, such as gibbons and elephants. In this lecture, Sooa Im McCormick, curator of Korean art, introduces a few ways to read and understand the language of symbolism in Korean animal paintings.
