Description

Although Arms described the trees with black wash in this drawing, he translated the effect of the foliage using only line on the plate. Aquatint, an etching technique which mimics the effect of wash, had been used to attain large areas of tone in earlier prints, but since it cannot be utilized for the kind of meticulous detail Arms sought, he rarely used it again.
