Description
This is the preparatory drawing for the couple’s first seasonal greeting card that included an original print. Arms studied law at Princeton University before transferring to the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1907 to pursue an interest in architecture. After receiving a master’s degree in 1912, he worked for the prestigious architectural firm of Carrère and Hastings in New York City, but then opened his own business with a partner in 1914. His career as an architect ended, however, after serving in the Navy during World War I. Arms began to make prints when his wife Dorothy bought him an etching kit for Christmas in 1913. He published his first print in 1915, and in 1919 decided to devote himself to printmaking instead.- Modern Gothic: The Etchings of John Taylor Arms. The Cleveland Museum of Art, Cleveland, OH (organizer) (June 9-September 30, 2012).
