Description

In the famous Kabuki play Shibaraku, the hero, depicted here, halts a villainous act by shouting shibaraku, or "just a moment." Although Mori spent thirty years in the textile industry designing kimono patterns, in the late 1950s he studied with Keisuke Serizawa (also in this exhibition) and began to use his knowledge of stencil-cutting to create original prints. His inventive images, based on subjects from the Kabuki theater, Japanese festivals, and traditional folktales, were extremely popular both in Japan and internationally.
