Description

Intuition and luck were paramount for Garry Winogrand's exceptional photographs. Rather than meticulously framing his compositions, Winogrand would snap thousands of photographs before settling on the few that he found unfamiliar, mysterious, or compelling. This image, taken while Winogrand toured the United States on a Guggenheim fellowship, demonstrates this element of chance in his work. In Utah he happened upon an unsettling interaction between man and beast. A cow tripped in front of Winogrand’s automobile, allowing the photographer to place the viewer at his vantage point: in the driver’s seat, anxiously anticipating the next few traumatic moments, without the ability to brake or swerve.
