Did You Know?

This is one of Picasso's rare portraits of a professional model. He painted it during his second visit to Paris and displayed it in an exhibition at Ambroise Vollard's gallery on the rue Laffite. The exhibition attracted considerable critical and commercial success.

Description

Pablo Picasso created this portrait of an artist’s model named Jeanne in the spring of 1901, in preparation for his first important exhibition in Paris. At this early point in his career, he painted in a style featuring rapidly applied, bold brushwork. Careful analysis reveals that the artist used three differently sized brushes: a wide one for the background and dress, a narrower one for the hat, and a smaller pointed one for the face.
