Doorway (Portal)
late 1400s
Overall: 358 x 259 cm (140 15/16 x 101 15/16 in.)
Location: not on view
Description
This doorway may have been a part of Federico da Montelfeltro's Ducal Palace in Gubbio, Italy, built in 1470 by Luciano Laurana and possibly finished by Francesco di Giorgio Martini. A Ducal studiolo decorated with wooden panels is in the Metropolitan Museum in New York. Because of the differences in ornamentation between the doorways in the Met's Ducal studiolo and this doorway, it is not certain that this doorway is from Gubbio's Ducal Palace. The arch of the doorway is decorated with masks, urns, and elaborate garlands. From the upper corners of the doorway, two profile heads face- reportedly from the Palace of the Dukes of Urbino at Gubbio; (Sangiori Gallery, Rome).
