The Docent Program is a volunteer teaching service for the Department of Education and Academic Affairs. Docents interact with visitors and create lasting memories through tours of the finest artistic and cultural traditions represented in our collection. They act as an important liaison between the museum collections, visitors, and staff.
Docents lead more than fifteen thousand visitors through the museum each year with tours that highlight the permanent collection, special exhibitions, as well as customized tours designed for adult and school groups. Docents are active members of the museum and are offered free parking, coffee, and discounts in our café and gift shop. These dedicated volunteers have been an integral part of the Department of Education and Academic Affairs since 2000.
Training involves working with Education and Academic Affairs staff on interactive teaching techniques as well as attending lectures by museum curators focusing on aspects of the permanent collection galleries and overviews of special exhibitions.
School Tour Docents
Are you interested in working with children, learning about object-based teaching, and interacting with artworks at the CMA? School tour docents provide student-centered, interactive tours of CMA’s collection to K-12 students visiting the museum.
Apprentice docents are required to attend training sessions (held during the week day hours) scheduled from August 2017 through May 2018, followed by model teaching and shadowing experiences. Apprentice docents will be expected to begin giving in tours in Fall 2018. The total time commitment during the first year of training is approximately 8-10 hours a month.
Interested volunteers should complete a volunteer profile no later than June 1, 2017 and email it to volunteer [at] clevelandart.org. Selected candidates will be invited to the museum for a brief interview prior to beginning training.
While we are not currently accepting applications for a new class of public tour docents, please register your name and contact information with Thomasine Clark, Docent Administrator, if you would like to be contacted at a later date. Thomasine Clark can be reached by phone at 216-707-2656 or by email at TClark [at] clevelandart.org.
