In 2014, the Cleveland Museum of Art treated The Crucifixion of Saint Andrew by Michelangelo Merisi da Caravaggio in front of museum visitors for the first time, and audiences were able to witness firsthand the skill, planning, research, and technical analysis that go in to a major conservation project. Conservator of Paintings, Dean Yoder, worked in the gallery, cleaning the painting by removing deteriorated varnish layers and old retouching, until the September, when the painting went back into the museum’s conservation laboratory for further restoration. Here, Yoder shares an update on the restoration of the Caravaggio since the fall and what comes next.

Masterpieces from the Cleveland Museum of Art are constantly traveling all over the world. Works from our collection are highly sought after for exhibitions in the United States and abroad. After conservators and curators evaluate whether a work is in good enough condition travel and determine the significance of the exhibition is a match, a work of art is carefully packed and accompanied by a courier on every step of its journey. Here is a sneak peek of some of one of these stories, which we will be featured in upcoming posts.
The Cleveland Museum of Art’s British miniatures are renowned for their exceptional quality. Coinciding with the opening of the Cleveland Museum of Art's Disembodied: Portrait Miniatures and Their Contemporary Relatives exhibition, the museum recently published British Portrait Miniatures. Authored by Associate Curator of European Art, Cory Korkow, the book takes a closer look at more than seventy treasures from the museum's extraordinary collection, many published for the first time.
Opening on Sunday, November 10, Disembodied: Portrait Miniatures and Their Contemporary Relatives reawakens the spirit of these works, which are removed by hundreds of years from the hands into which they were originally placed.
