Description

This hand-painted sign marks the entrance to an artists’ community established on Beijing’s east side in the early 1990s. The artists nicknamed the neighborhood “Beijing East Village” to suggest their affinity with New York City’s rebellious East Village art scene. The view, while avoiding the most squalid areas of the village, leaves little doubt about the hardscrabble nature of life there.
