Description

While still in college, Lyon went south to participate in the civil rights movement and in 1962–64 became an official photographer for the student nonviolent coordinating committee (SNCC), one of the movement’s more radical branches. SNCC collaborated with other community groups to launch a voter registration movement in Albany, a segregated city in southwest Georgia that was 40% black.
