Paul Remmey

(American, 1903-1957)

Watercolor over graphite

Support: Illustration board

Sheet: 55.5 x 76 cm (21 7/8 x 29 15/16 in.)

Gift of Jeffrey S. Caimi 2017.271

Description

Paul Remmey worked in and around Philadelphia and was particularly drawn to the farmland outside the city. Shack with Path is from a series of rural buildings in which Remmey captured the melancholy of abandoned farms and a bygone rural age. Technically refined, the watercolor follows Remmey’s insistence on simplicity and structural clarity, executed with broad washes in a subdued palette.
