Did You Know?

Larry Fink’s technique in Social Graces is the same, whether he is photographing in a New York City ballroom or a rural Pennsylvania kitchen.

Description

In these crowded spaces, Larry Fink often must shoot quite close to his subjects. Because the light is limited, he uses a handheld flash, which can be very harsh light. Fink softens that in printing so that the figures are set into relief rather than flattened.
A square black-and-white photograph depicts people with light skin tones gathered around a table. On our left, an older woman with a cigarette in her mouth leans toward a dark cake. On our right, a boy in a skull-patterned t-shirt slices the cake. Others watch from behind. Glass jars, cans, and an ashtray clutter the foreground. A framed picture and curtained window hang on the wall in the background.
