Did You Know?

To allow for the depth of carving, numerous layers of different colored lacquer were applied to a core of wood strengthened by a fabric covering impregnated with lacquer.

Description

The carved lacquer box and lobed silver container nearby both feature pairs of birds and flowers on their covers. There is a striking similarity in decoration, shape, and aesthetic appeal. Both boxes suggest that successful designs and shapes circulated among craftsmen, workshops, and beyond regional borders.
A dark brown lacquer bowl features a wide, shallow interior and a cylindrical base. The exterior wall displays three tiered bands of deep carvings. The top band depicts a bird among dense flowers and leaves. A middle band contains repeating spirals, while the bottom band shows a geometric key fret pattern. These intricate carvings create a heavily textured surface that contrasts with the smooth, polished interior.
