One side of a gold coin features an inscription circling an image (see "Inscriptions" field). On the left, Romanus III in patterned imperial robes holds a cross-topped globe. On the right, the taller Virgin Mary, with a halo encircling her head, places a crown on the emperor's head. The gold coin has a hand-struck appearance and an irregular circular edge.
