Description

In the Czech Republic, studio glass artisans have become widely know for creating work through casting glass rather than blowing it. Using this method, Libensky and Brychtova created large, solid monochrome sculptures, manipulating texture and the density of color as the glass goes from thicker to thinner sections within their forms. Husband and wife, these artists were also educatos, and their influence has defined the Czech style of glass casting.
A translucent cast glass sculpture consists of a tall, symmetrical form resembling a high-backed seat with a faceted, pointed top. The dark gray material is nearly opaque in the center, transitioning to smoky, ethereal tones at its edges. Two blocky wings flare outward from the base. Light catches internal bubbles and highlights the rough, raw texture along the top rim, while the base glows against a dark gradient background.
