Did You Know?

This fan painting is from a set that gives insights into Fu Baoshi's personal life and reveals the depth of his artistic vision.

Description

This fan painting shows a charming scene of figures boating in a river framed by overhanging branches flowering in pink. The inscription states: “Today is the Dragon Boat Festival. This is painted to welcome my daughter Yishan home for a reunion. Inscribed by Baoshi in the early evening of 25 June 1963.” It is noteworthy that Fu Baoshi chose a joyful spring scene to express his delight about his daughter having returned home.
A fan-shaped painting depicts a river scene where a large tree of muted pink blossoms reaches from the left. Two small wooden boats carry figures with light skin tones, one wearing a vibrant red robe. Vertical columns of Chinese calligraphy and a red seal occupy the right side of the cream paper. Soft pink washes form the flowers, while fine dark lines detail the boats and the tree's delicate branches.
