Did You Know?

Hartley studied briefly at the Cleveland School (now Institute) of Art in 1898.

Description

Although Hartley visited New Mexico during 1917–18, this landscape was painted a few years later when he lived temporarily in Berlin, Germany. This distance in time and place seems to have spurred the artist’s imagination: with its agitated paint application, turbulent composition, and somber palette, New Mexico Recollection evokes an emotional state more than it records a particular site.
