Two soldiers create a fire to drive the wolves out.

Description

Part of the series “Clearing the Mountains” (soushan tu), this leaf depicts a soldier who uses his spear to probe a hollow in which two wolves are hiding. To the right of the pine trees at the center are three soldiers, two of whom are searching for their targets, and one carrying an enormous log.
A square black ink drawing on tan paper with torn edges depicts five figures among trees and rocks. To the left, a muscular man with wild hair crouches with a long spear. Two tree trunks dominate the center; figures peek from behind, including one in armor. At the bottom right, another muscular figure moves away near a small red seal. Faint lines below suggest a fifth animal-like creature.
