Description

These twelve figures are personifications of the dizhi 地支, or Earthly Branches. Each is accompanied by its corresponding animal in the Chinese zodiac. The Earthly Branches would normally be accompanied by the ten Heavenly Stems, or tiangan 天干, which suggests a missing leaf.
A horizontally oriented ink drawing on aged paper depicts two groups of Daoist deities moving through swirling clouds. In the upper right, figures in voluminous robes and elaborate headpieces walk leftward. In the lower left, another group moves toward the right. Fine lines outline the light-skinned beings, while small Chinese calligraphy labels them. Reddish staining appears along the bottom edge with a red seal in the lower right corner.
