Description

Hasui said, "I do not paint subjective impressions. My work is based on reality." However, he also admitted, "I cannot falsify...[but] I can simplify...I make mental impressions of the light and color at the time of the sketching. While coloring the sketch, I am already imagining the effects in a woodblock print." Hasui’s methods resemble the ukiyo-e printmakers he sought to emulate and also indicate the extent to which these artists portrayed reality as they understood it.
