Description

In 1993 Lauren Greenfield received the first photographic documentary grant sponsored by National Geographic-for a project about Los Angeles youth. This photograph, published in her award winning book, Fast Forward: Growing up in the Shadow of Hollywood, was taken during the ensuing four-year exploration. While the title provides the story line, it is Skylar's facial expression and body language that animate the image. Greenfield enriches the composition's formal and symbolic qualities by photographing in a room filled with glass windows and mirrors. The resulting layered, hard to decipher patterns of light, shade, and reflection suggest the complexity of this boy's interaction with his father.
