Description

In this pair of figure paintings, the artist provided generational portraits of two clan leaders from the Hirai family, accompanied by lengthy inscriptions in a distinctive calligraphic style from separate scholar-officials.
A hanging scroll depicts a portrait of Hirai Rinsei, a man with light skin tone seated turned slightly to our left, cross-legged. He wears a wide-shouldered blue patterned garment over a black robe with a sword tucked into his waist. Rinsei has a partially shaved head and a small topknot. Above him, vertical columns of Japanese calligraphy fill the top half of the vertically oriented composition against a beige background.
