Description

In this pair of figure paintings, the artist provided generational portraits of two clan leaders from the Hirai family, accompanied by lengthy inscriptions in a distinctive calligraphic style from separate scholar-officials.
A vertical hanging scroll depicts Samurai-Official Hirai Kyosei, a man with light skin tone seated cross-legged and looking to our right. Dense black calligraphy fills the scroll's upper half, contrasting with the plain, light-brown silk background below. He wears a dark kimono under a wide-shouldered, brownish-purple vest with white crests. A folded fan rests before him, while black signatures and red seals mark the left side.
