The tortoise shell was a popular material for sword decoration for its association with the legend of ancient heroes.

Description

The tortoise shell was a popular material for sword decoration for its association with the legend of ancient heroes. For example, a tortoise is believed to have helped rulers tame natural disasters.
A long, slender scabbard features mottled yellow and dark brown tortoiseshell, interspersed with four brass-colored metal bands. These bands are engraved with circular symbols and scrolling patterns. Two small loops extend from the side of the upper mounts. Tapering downward, the sheath terminates in a decorative metal cap patterned with matching motifs.
