A thick, sturdy volume has a pebbled dark-brown leather spine. In gold on the spine is "THE NORTH AMERICAN INDIAN," "CURTIS VOL. VIII," and names of tribes including "NEZ PERCES." Raised horizontal bands divide the leather, while the lower section features parallel vertical gold lines. A tan cloth cover meets the leather in a sharp diagonal. Near the base is a small white label, and "1911" is stamped in gold at the bottom.
