Description

The Master of the Nuremberg Passion—named for a set of prints in the Germanisches Nationalmuseum, Nuremberg—was probably a contemporary of the Master E. S. and ranks among the best engravers of his period. He made some 19 engravings, and Saint Augustine and the Child on the Seashore, the most mature of his works, only survives in this unique example. Even the finest lines printed clearly in this early, rich impression.
A vertically oriented print in black ink depicts St. Augustine and a child. On the left, Augustine has a light skin tone, wearing a miter and holding a curved staff. To our right, a nude child with a halo sits on the grass, pouring water from a spoon into a hole. Behind them, a river winds past a walled city and a windmill. Jagged rocks and trees frame the background.
