Did You Know?

Maurice Prendergast became influenced by Impressionism after studying for two years in Paris during the 1880s.

Description

Executed during Prendergast's first trip to Italy, he selected a classic Roman tourist site, theatrical with its sweeping curves, and depicted three dozen red-robed Catholic seminarians flowing down the carefully delineated monumental staircase.
A vertically oriented color monotype with soft, layered textures depicts numerous figures with light skin tones in floor-length red robes and black hats descending wide stone stairs. In the foreground, a large stone sphere sits on a pedestal. The stairs curve upward toward buildings with glowing yellow windows and a green tree. Handwritten block letters at the bottom read "The Spanish Steps" and "M.B.P."
