The Virtuoso

Lyonel Feininger

(American, 1871-1956)

Image: 16.2 x 20.8 cm (6 3/8 x 8 3/16 in.)

Gift of Dr. and Mrs. Gorden W. Hasse 1972.105

Catalogue raisonné: Prasse, W 181

Feininger loved fine quality handmade papers, particularly those from Japan which are relatively soft and thus have a capacity for absorbing the ink, an essential quality in the printing of woodblocks. The resulting rich, deep, satisfying black of a successful proof is the ultimate in the fulfillment of a perfectly cut block. This impression of The Virtuoso, printed on yellow Japanese Kozo paper, is the only one known.
