Description

Although her subjects are frequently drawn from her extensive travels or her adopted North American surroundings, Matsubara's strong sensibility for the aesthetic power of black and white undoubtedly derives from the bold brushwork of the traditional calligraphy produced by her father, who was a Shinto priest. Matsubara was also influenced by Shikø Munakata, whose woodcuts are on view in this exhibition.
