Description

The design consists of aligned rows of linked roundels enclosing a prince seated on a cushioned throne and holding a large falcon on each hand. The roundel is framed by an inscription in floriated Kufic, which is orthograde along the left half of the roundel and retrograde along right half. The points of junction of the large roundels are ornamented by small roundels enclosing star motifs.
A dark brown silk textile fragment features a pattern of circular medallions enclosing seated, haloed figures holding two falcons. Facing forward, each figure is flanked by birds with outspread wings against a light ground. Bands of light-colored, angular script border the circles, meeting at floral motifs. The fabric is frayed and irregular, with large sections missing along the left and bottom edges. Pale-toned patterns stand out clearly against the dark background.
