Description

In aligned rows and columns, this textile preserves two rows of three eight-pointed stars and fragments of stars on all four sides. Each eight-pointed star has a narrow border of pearls that encloses a 16-pointed star with a border of scrolling foliate motif. The inner star has a design in the upper half that is repeated in mirror image in the lower half; it consists of pair of winged quadrupeds flanking a tree of life. All interstices in both stars are filled with a stylized floral motif. Interspaces are ornamented with a cross of four-directional palmettes.
Two horizontal fragments of a woven silk textile feature a repeating dark brown pattern on a muted tan ground. A dense lattice of interlocking eight-pointed stars encloses intricate, bud-like foliate motifs. Similar dark shapes occupy the spaces between the stars. Significant wear is marked by ragged edges and numerous small holes throughout the fabric. The irregular top fragment sits above a narrow strip, both displaying the same continuous geometric design.
