Did You Know?

The image is probably derived from European prints, which were popular in the Qing court.

Description

This two-sided table screen is an enamel-painted copper plaque with European figures. European enamelware was introduced to China through missionary-artists at the Beijing court and foreign trade in Guangzhou.
An octagonal painted enamel and glass painting depicts a landscape with people with light skin tones. At the center left edge, two men in coats stand beside a tree. In the center, a figure sits on a white donkey. At the right, figures in colorful robes gather, one holding a yellow banner. Billowing white clouds fill the sky above hills. An ornate border with gold floral patterns on a dark background frames the scene.
