Khujasta’s large face and the rendering of her scarf are vestiges of an earlier style.

Description

Tuti the wise parrot begins to tell Khujasta a moralizing tale of a merchant, the son of a vizier, and a magical, wooden parrot. An inscription in the margin of this page attributes it to the painter Iqbal.
A vertically oriented painting on paper presents a split composition of narrative imagery and calligraphy. In the upper half, a stylized woman in a vibrant orange tunic stands by a patterned divan, reaching toward a green parrot within a hanging golden cage. To our right, a domed hexagonal tower rises outdoors. Below, five lines of sweeping black calligraphic script are elegantly inked onto tan paper, framed by a delicate red and gold border.
