Did You Know?

The lotus pool has a long tradition in pre-Mughal painting.

Description

A serene, blue lotus pool is surrounded by plants and wildlife. Bright yellow squirrels climb up the thin trunks of date palms, while birds perch in the treetops. Fish swim in the stylized “basket-weave” water. This is one of only two non-narrative landscape scenes in this volume of the Tuti-nama.
A vertically oriented manuscript page depicts eleven lines of black Persian script above a landscape. Symmetrical groups of rounded green trees and tall, slender brown palms flank a central, rectangular gray lotus pool dotted with pink flowers. Small birds rest among the branches. Rendered in tempera and ink, the scene is framed by a thin gold and blue border and set within wide cream-colored margins.
