The boiling oil purifies the old man by burning away his animal characteristics.

Description

The rejuvenated King of Kings, dressed in orange, stands at the bottom of a pit with the daughter of the king of the jinns and her elderly lover. The Brahman, dressed in white, peers over the edge. The King rubs the old man with the elixir of life so that he can pass through the oil and be purified.
A vertically oriented gum tempera painting depicts a brick well's cross-section beneath a streaked blue sky. In the upper half, a man in a white tunic points downward from a sandy landscape with lush green trees. Inside the well's dark base, a man in a green tunic gestures toward a bowing woman in red and white. Nearby, a man in an orange tunic stands by a small fire and pink stairs.
