Description

In this delicate view of the French suburban town Charenton-le-Pont, on the right bank of the Seine, tiny boats, suggested by a few pen and ink lines, glide under a bridge. The striking, reflective surface of the water is suggested by the bright white of the paper. Pennell executed a number of panoramic views of Paris in 1893. The linear quality of this drawing suggests that this may have been a preliminary study for an etching which was never executed.
A horizontally oriented ink drawing depicts a serene river scene. A three-arched bridge spans the middle ground, its structure mirrored by vertical strokes in the water below. Tall, spindly trees and simple buildings line the left bank near a steamboat. In the foreground, tiny figures navigate small boats across the river. Dense, horizontal lines fill the sky, while the word "Charenton" is inscribed in expressive cursive at the bottom right.
