Fish and Flower and Female Buddha (Sakana, Hana to Butsujo)

Fish and Flower and Female Buddha (Sakana, Hana to Butsujo)

1957

Shiko Munakata

(Japanese, 1903-1975)

Brush and India ink

Gift of The Print Club of Cleveland 1959.9

Description

Executed quickly with brush and ink, this sketch captures the artist’s first inspiration. Since Munakata did not slavishly follow his preparatory drawings when he carved the woodblock, they only give a general idea of the final image.
