Description

It is likely this pair of enamel plaques depicting the apostles Simon with Thaddeus and Thomas with Matthew once formed part of the decoration of a portable altar, a reliquary triptych, or some other kind of liturgical object.
A gilded copper and champlevé enamel plaque depicts two bearded figures looking toward our right with large eyes. Simon, on our left, wears a green and white robe and holds a blue patterned book. Thaddaeus, on our right, wears a green robe and holds a red patterned book. Both have blue halos. Latin text appears above and between them. The pitted surface is set within a gilded border with corner holes.
